Enigma Machine – its Fatal Flaws
At the start of the Second World War, the Enigma machine was believed to be unbreakable. Its designers were confident, its operators well trained, and the mathematics behind it seemed to guarantee absolute secrecy. Billions upon billions of possible settings — what could possibly go wrong?
Quite a lot, as it turns out.
In this lively and accessible talk, Dave Gilbert, one of our Trustees, will lift the lid on one of the most famous encryption devices in history. Together, we’ll explore how the Enigma machine actually works – not in dry, mathematical terms, but in a clear and visual way that brings the mechanism to life. Using animated graphics, you’ll see how its ingenious design created both its strength… and the subtle weaknesses that would ultimately prove to be its downfall.
Because here’s the twist: Enigma wasn’t “broken” by brute force or luck. It was undone by its own design – small, seemingly harmless, unintended features that, when combined with human habits, opened the door to codebreakers.
In the second half, it’s over to you.
You’ll split into teams and get hands-on with fully working Enigma machines. Set them up, send encoded messages, and see if you can successfully communicate with the other team. It’s part challenge, part experiment – and a great way to appreciate just how fiendishly clever (and flawed) Enigma really was.
By the end, you’ll not only understand how Enigma works, but also why it should have been secure… and why, in the end, it wasn’t.
A fascinating mix of history, engineering, and a touch of wartime intrigue – no prior knowledge required, just a willingness to learn and have a go.
