Coastal Command: Their defining struggle in the Second World War
How the RAF handled the roller-coaster ride that Coastal Command was obliged to endure in WWII as it struggled against the Royal Navy, politicians and other commands of the RAF as well as a formidable foe.
Following on from the Overview of Coastal Command given by Sqn Ldr (Ret) Bob Hall, this lecture goes into the nuts and bolts of the immediate pre-war and wartime struggles faced by Coastal Command. We see how woefully underprepared they were for the conflict, how our well equipped enemies very nearly won and what Coastal was able to do in order to achieve ascendancy. The lecture is in the form of three briefings placed in 1939, 41 and 43 to give an authentic flavour of the views and situations at each date, and we finish with an explanation of the importance of this battle to the success of D-Day.

The Speaker:
| Simon Kemp has worked in IT for over 40 years at various levels and with numerous companies/organisations. He has delivered software systems and consultancy for Marshalls of Cambridge, Spilsby, Airbus and MoD Boscombe Down as well as P&O Cruises, Manpower, a veterinary group and port health authority! He’s also delivered workshops and multi-day training courses on technical subjects.
His relocation to Lincolnshire in 2021 enabled him to become a member at MAVC and a volunteer guide at BBMF in 2022 where he’s delivered tours for RAF personnel and members of the public. He’s also got experience of business presentations for up to 300, stage roles to audiences of up to 450 and speaking roles at events. |
| Simon Kemp has had a lifelong passion for planes, speed and technology. Growing up in the dangerous era of 60’s and 70’s Formula One motor racing and the thankfully reducing trauma of air travel, he was nonetheless seduced by the risk and reward of both.
He has performed on stage as a speaker, presenter, master of ceremonies and was part of the 2 week run of Ayckbourn’s play “Man of the Moment” at Northampton’s Royal Theatre. He has also relished roles as a panto dame in 2 “Am-Dram” pantomimes. |
