LINCOLNSHIRE SKIES – A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO THE DAMBUSTERS

Performed by Steve Walker’s Big Swing Band, the main feature of the concert is Lincolnshire composer Jonathan Nowell’s highly acclaimed Lincolnshire Skies suite for big band, vocalists and narrator.

Jonathan’s Lincolnshire Skies suite is at once evocative, moving and uplifting, in equal measures.  Capturing the national spirit and amazing bravery surrounding the Dambusters incredibly daring wartime raids.  This is a very special musical event not to be missed.

To set the 1940’s mood, the evening starts with a tribute to Glenn Miller and many more beloved wartime classic swing numbers, with the Lincolnshire Skies suite following in the second half.

About the composer:

Jonathan Nowell – Jonty to his friends – trained at the City of Leeds College of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Music, studied for his Master’s in Composition at Nottingham University and now works in and around Lincoln.

He is active as a composer and performer in a variety of genres, from classical to jazz and folk music. Jonathan combines his role as Director of Music at Burton Hathow Preparatory School with a busy freelance schedule.

As a published composer and songwriter, he has had premieres in Lincoln and Canterbury cathedrals and the Royal Albert Hall, among other places. He is also in demand locally as an

accompanist and piano teacher.

 

 

 

 

About Steve Walker and his Big Swing Band:

Born in Middlesbrough, Steve began his professional musical career at the tender age of 14. Serving his apprenticeship in the tough northeast dance band scene, he went on to study trumpet with Arthur Butterworth and David James at Huddersfield and graduated with a BA (Hons) Degree in Music.

During the 1980s and 90s Steve led his own successful band, regularly performing at many major UK holiday resorts, plus on many of the world’s most famous cruise liners, including the prestigious QE2, Canberra, Oriana and the Arcadia.

Since then, Steve has enjoyed a long, varied and successful career as a freelance and session musician, conductor, arranger and Musical Director appearing all over the world with recording artists such as The Commodores, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, The Miracles, Patti Austin, The British Philharmonic Orchestra, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra plus the Syd Lawrence and Joe Loss Orchestras.

Steve is a published music arranger and also leads his own swing band – the Steve Walker Big Swing Band. This exciting band play to sell-out audiences on a regular basis and have become well known for playing a wide range of music from early swing classics, through to modern jazz orchestra pieces, plus Steve’s own accomplished arrangements.
