IBCC Lecture and Supper Series – An Overview of Coastal Command
At the turn of the 20th Century, Britain had a heritage of seaborne trade vital to its prosperity and survival. The protection of this trade was essential, but the development of submarines and aircraft altered the way that trade needed protection.
The talk will look at how the RN developed that protection during World War 1, and how that was taken forward by the RAF after its creation in 1918. It will look at the command arrangements prior to and after the formation of Coastal Command in 1936, and its early teething problems before World War Two. The Command’s subordinate formations during the war, how they changed after WW2 and the current command arrangement along with its roles in peace and war up to the present day will be discussed.
The talk will not cover Inter-Service and Intra-Service rivalries or political oversight during World War 2, which will all be covered by Simon Kemp in a talk next year.
The talk will be given by Sqn Ldr (Ret) Bob Hall, who is the Ceremonial & Functions Member for the Coastal Command Association (CCA).
