Due to popular demand, our Animals of War Trail will run until the Summer Holidays!
Our Animals of War Trail invites you to discover the remarkable creatures—big and small—that supported Bomber Command and life on wartime airfields. From messenger pigeons and squadron mascot dogs to ops room cats, follow the trail around the IBCC to uncover fascinating stories of animals in wartime.
Find any of the following on your hunt:
🐶 Dogs who became loyal mascots. They boosted morale, sensed approaching aircraft, and provided companionship to crews far from home.
🕊 Pigeons who carried vital messages when radio communication failed, helping to save lives.
🐱 Cats who controlled rats and mice, protecting precious food and equipment.
🐴 Horses, 🫏 donkeys, and even 🐻 a bear who helped transport supplies and ammunition.
🐐 Goats who were kept as mascots and sometimes provided milk.
