Women in War Unveiling Gallery
On the 14th March 10 8ft silhouettes of Women In War were unveiled in a ceremony that saw 18 “modern giants”, women in senior roles across many sectors, cutting the ribbons. They were treated to the RAF’s first all-female flypast including a Prefect from 57 Squadron at RAF Cranwell, a Typhoon from 11 Squadron based at RAF Coningsby and an Atlas from 206 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton.
Among the 22,442 people who lost their lives serving under British command on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy, two were women. 27-old Sister Mollie Evershed and Sister Dorothy Anyta Field, who was 32, were both nurses. They were serving with the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service.
