Miscellaneous Information
Shot while attempting to escape from Stalg Luft VIIIB, accoridng to the PoW report filed by Sgt. Ernest George Rawlinson of No. 952 Squadron RAF Balloon Command. Written on the same report, although in a different hand, is 'Rawlinson apparently planned to escape with Sgt. A. R. Cook by breaking away from a working party. Cook got through but unfortunately Rawlinson was caught at the gate on his identity check. The attached chit was taken down off the camp notice board by Sgt R, which confirms the shooting of Sgt. Cook shortly afterwards'. Attached to the questionnaire is a folder slip of paper which reads: 'STALAG VIII B. NOTICES NR. 146. 30.6.43. 695. OBITUARY. IS [sic] IS REGRETTED TO REPORT THE DEATH OF THE UNDERMENTIONED PRISONERS OF WAR WHO LOST THEIR LIVES BY SHOOTING DURING AN ESCAPE, ON 19.6.43. 26825 SGT.
