Miscellaneous Information
F/L R D Ferguson (Navigator) and Sgt. R L Hooper survived and became PoW, although F/L Ferguson never made it as far as a PoW camp, having escaped from Turin military hospital on 8th November 1943 |
Known as John, he was educated at Watford Boys Grammar School. His mother suffered from cancer and died when he was 12/13. He went to Australia at 18 under the Big Brother scheme, but was forced to come back by the great depression of 1929. He followed his father into the bakery business, but also worked for a time as technical rep for Stork margarine. He entered the RAF as a volunteer reserve in 1940 and trained as a navigator in South Africa among other places. He spent a total of 3 years training and 3 months on active service. He left a widow of 30, a daughter (Betty) of 12 and two sons aged 10 (Peter) and 4 (Michael). |
