Operation | Villers-Bocage- to bomb a key road junction to prevent two German Panzer tank divisions from reaching the Normandy area. 266 aircraft bombed at low level to ensure maximum accuracy, at the orders of the Master Bomber. 1100 tons of bombs were dropped, scuppering the planned Panzer attack. |
Reason for Loss | Collided mid-air with a 15 Sqn Lancaster and crashed onto farmland near Midhurst, Sussex. The other aircraft landed safely and continued in service. |
