Thursday 23rd November 6.30pm
Simon Pearson looks at the part played by bomber crews in the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in March 1944, from their use of secret codes to secure escape equipment, the building of the great tunnels, and the raid on Berlin that left the prisoners in the dark deep underground.
Pearson is the best-selling author of “The Great Escaper”, the only biography of Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, known as “Big X”, who organised the escape with a plan to get 200 inmates out of the camp.
He is also the author of “Battle of Britain: The Pilots and Planes that Made History”, which includes a focus on Bomber Command’s role in the summer of 1940.
A former executive editor of The Times, he continues to write aviation-related obituaries for the paper, many of them related to events in the Second World War.
The evening starts with a delicious hot buffet supper in The Hub Café at 18.30.
